Dallas Cowboys Should Steer Clear of Alabama CB Dre Kirkpatrick Following Marijuana Incident
Alabama cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick is on the Dallas Cowboys’ shortlist of players that the team might draft with the No. 14 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. That should change immediately as the national champion defensive back was arrested for marijuana possession on Tuesday.
It was unlikely that Kirkpatrick would have fallen to No. 14 before this incident, but he would have been a draft steal at that slot. If he was still clean, the Cowboys would have been extremely fortunate to draft him at No. 14 if he was available.
Early Tuesday morning, Kirkpatrick was charged with possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and arrested along with former Alabama teammate Chris Rogers. Both were released on $120 bond, but that’s a drop in the bucket to the substantial amount of money Kirkpatrick just lost.
There’s no way Kirkpatrick will be a top 10 pick now that he’s in trouble with the law. I mean, how dumb do you have to be? He was a surefire first-round NFL draft pick just after winning the BCS National Championship and then he puts his future in jeopardy over something as silly as this. Sound familiar?
The Cowboys are still dealing with off-field issues with receiver Dez Bryant after he had supposedly turned a corner in his life. Bryant was involved in a physical altercation in a Miami nightclub on Sunday. Dallas absolutely cannot use another first-round draft pick on a talented player who’s constantly in trouble with the law.
Regardless of Kirkpatrick’s talent and his tremendous candidacy as an NFL cornerback, stuff like this simply isn’t worth the trouble. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones obviously takes chances on such players, i.e. Bryant, but that’s just one of his many faults. However, a team like Dallas doesn’t need another distraction. The Cowboys are still trying to find leaders among a group of a few talented players with tons of potential. They’ll never reach that potential with guys like Bryant and Kirkpatrick holding them back.

Dez Bryant is not an issue. Has yet to be arrested. Just some stupid lawsuits which are now paid off, and a altercation at a club.
Hardly a PROBLEM when the guy is watched with a magnifying glass. He is young, and immature still. Big deal.
If you haven’t been around a fight in your life, or almost been part of one, I feel for you. Also, if you haven’t been in debt ever for something or late on a payment god bless you. People take advantage of young people who don’t know how money works.
Lastly.. Marijuana is hardly a drug that should be illegal anymore. Anyone to think it should is probably over the age of 70.. also probably religious. If Kirk drops, it will be a blessing regardless of this.
What?! You are a TARD! He IS a sure fire top 10 talent at a position that just happens to be the Boys biggest need! WHEN he falls to 14, they should be sprinting to the table to select him and thank their STARS that they finally have a top tier CB for the next 6-8 years. Pot possession, or even his stupidity in getting caught, is NOTHING compared to the heartache of continual failure that this teams has experienced for 15+ years! Their biggest need is a good sized CB that can stop the big guys like Nicks and Cruz, Johnson, Johnson, Fitz, White and Jones, etc.
This is the dumbest article I’ve read in a long time. The writer has to be going for shock value. For example, Ben Roethlisburger has been accused of RAPE twice, Ray Lewis has faced MURDER charges, Andre Johnson BEAT UP a man on the field. All of those players seem to lead pretty well. How can you pass so much judgement on someone you’ve never encountered. U R RIDICULOUS AND A DISGRACE TO YOUR PROFESSION. U SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED TO WRITE ANYMORE.
