Dallas Cowboys’ Jerome Henderson Needs New Defensive Backs
New Dallas Cowboys secondary coach Jerome Henderson is a very confident guy and his history with Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is a major plus. However, his confidence in the Cowboys’ current stable of defensive backs isn’t impressive, although it at least seems sincere. Regardless of the confidence Henderson expresses in the Cowboys’ secondary, this unit desperately needs multiple upgrades.
“I’m sure there are guys in place that will be on this team that will be big contributors on this team,” Henderson said. “I just don’t know the roles and I don’t know what I have to do with them to get them to where I want them to be or where they should be.”
The Cowboys’ pass defense couldn’t be any worse than it was this season, so Henderson can definitely help the current group of guys in the secondary, but he can’t make them a championship-caliber unit.
Cowboys safety Abram Elam played under Henderson and Ryan in Cleveland and both coaches are big fans of the savvy veteran. However, he’s an unrestricted free agent and he did not receive a contract extension this season like fellow starting safety Gerald Sensabaugh. Henderson may not have his buddy playing safety for him this year like he originally thought.
“Abe is probably one of the best people I know,” Henderson said. “One of the best men, cares about his teammates, cares about football, works his butt off, studies, prepares, competes. He’s tough. I love the kid.”
While some other members of Cowboys Nation agree with Henderson, not nearly all share his admiration for Elam. If Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believed Elam was essential part to this team’s future, he would have offered him a contract extension along with, or instead of, Sensabaugh.
“I do know there are a lot of guys who will play a lot of football for the Dallas Cowboys that are already on the roster,” Henderson said.
Henderson is correct, but those players don’t include members of the secondary. Although Cowboys cornerbacks Orlando Scandrick and Terence Newman both received nice, new contracts recently, neither should be brought back for 2012 or beyond.
Alan Ball and Frank Walker are both free agents, so they’ll be gone, but neither of them started. The Cowboys need a new starting cornerback to line up opposite Mike Jenkins and another solid replacement for Scandrick as the No. 3 option.
If the Cowboys bring in one or more of these 10 stellar free agent cornerbacks, then Henderson will have a group that he can mold into a championship-caliber unit. Until then, he’ll have to milk that admirable confidence for all its worth and then pray Newman and Scandrick become better players this offseason. Jones absolutely has to bring in some help via free agency or the 2012 NFL Draft. Henderson may be the right man for the job, but he can’t be successful without the right personnel. Just ask Wade Phillips…
