Dallas Cowboys Pursuing Oakland Raiders Free Agent CB Stanford Routt
The Dallas Cowboys are apparently interested in free agent cornerback Stanford Routt, who was released by the Oakland Raiders on Thursday. The Cowboys have contacted Routt’s agent, Vann McElroy, about a visit to Dallas. Routt played for Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Oakland, the primary reason for the team’s interest.
Routt signed a new five-year, $54.5 million contract with the Raiders in 2011. The Cowboys aren’t looking to spend that kind of money on a free agent cornerback unless it was a higher profile player like the San Francisco 49ers’ Carlos Rogers or the Tennessee Titans’ Cortland Finnegan.
Last year was Routt’s seventh NFL season and his best as a pro. The Austin, Texas, native intercepted four passes and recorded 49 tackles in 15 starts. While he’s no All-Pro, Routt can’t be any worse than Terence Newman, Orlando Scandrick and Alan Ball were in 2011.
Speculation around Valley Ranch is the Cowboys will cut Newman this offseason to save cash; he’s due $6 million this year, $7.6 million next season and $7.5 million in 2014. Routt was making more than that in Oakland, so he’ll have to take a pay cut to play in Dallas, but he apparently would like to play for Ryan again.

As a die hard Raider fan, I hate to see Routt headed out of town. A sub 4.3, good man coverage and a decent tackler in the run support. I think the 2 main problems will fix themselves with this guy. First, he will no longer be overpaid. Im sure he will take a pay cut to sign on somewhere. Second, the penalties!!!! This will be a fairly simple fix. All he has to do is not wear a Raider uniform and that will cut those yellow flag way back. Look at a number of replays and you can clearly see the official reaching for the flag, looking like he is preparing for a duel with pistols as soon as play starts. The eye sees what you want to see. The poor communication in the Raider secondary has a player look silly if hes expecting help from the safety. I think #26 will be a solid player for another team. Good luck, Stanford!!!
