Dallas Cowboys Hire Joe Baker as Assistant Secondary Coach
The Dallas Cowboys hired Joe Baker as assistant secondary coach on Monday. The move comes four weeks after the Cowboys hired Jerome Henderson to replace Dave Campo as secondary coach. Baker has been an NFL assistant coach for 16 years and spent the last three with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Baker joins Henderson in taking over a secondary that contended for worst in the NFL in 2011.
Baker has ties to Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett; the two played football together at Princeton in 1987 and ’88 when Garrett was the quarterback and Baker was a receiver.
Now both men will be judged on how they can get current players to perform rather than themselves and Dallas desperately needs help in the secondary. While Baker was in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers’ pass defense ranked 10th, 7th and 21st in the NFL each season. Tampa Bay’s pass defense ranked higher than Dallas’ in each of those three seasons.
Henderson’s pass defense in Cleveland ranked 18th in 2010 and 2nd this past season, so both men have coached top 10 units in the past two years. That bodes well for the Cowboys, who gave up franchise highs in passing yards this past season.
