Darren Woodson: Troy Aikman is Dallas Cowboys’ Best QB
Dallas Cowboys Hall of Famer Troy Aikman sounded loopy on Tuesday when he said current Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo is better than he was. On Thursday, Cowboys legendary safety Darren Woodson set the record straight by saying Aikman is the better signal-caller.
“I don’t know if I’m biased, but I saw the best every day in practice — and that’s Troy Aikman,” Woodson said.
Aikman and Woodson played together in Dallas from 1992 through 2000, winning three Super Bowls during that time. The first Super Bowl came in Aikman’s fourth season as a starter and while the team he had around him is far better than the one Romo currently has to work with, the Cowboys’ current passer isn’t in the same class.
“You talk about leadership skills, you talk about controlling the huddle, being a huge locker room presence, brought his lunch pail to work every single day, [Aikman] is probably the most accurate quarterback I’ve ever seen throw the ball,” Woodson said. “A guy that really understood his role and made people play at a high level around him. They don’t get any better than Troy Aikman. I haven’t seen it.”
Neither have any Cowboys fans that actually watch the team’s games. If the Dallas faithful want to argue Roger Staubach vs. Aikman, they should do so because that’s a fair argument. However, Romo’s name doesn’t belong in the mix and shouldn’t until he puts the Cowboys on his back and wins some games when needed. Thank goodness there’s a guy like Woodson to set the record straight.

Aikman was great, but he did have quite a supporting cast. He and Staubach had something in common. They made those around them better and they could play under pressure. Romo hasn’t shown he can do either of those.
Com’n man! You cannot compare QBs from different teams from different eras because of the style of play and the compliment of supporting players. Troy played on a very balanced team with solid play makers like Irvin, Smith, Allen, Haley, Johnston, Novacek, Lett, Hennings, Maryland, Sanders, etc… on both side of the field and proven veteran coaches. After Troy started winning in the 90s, Dallas was always a perennial favorite to go all the way. What happened after JJohnson and BSwitzer left and all the star players left the game as Troy tried to fend for himself. He retired way too early in his career because he kept getting hit more often. Troy was so mediocre after all that. Roger also left the game earlier than expected and could have played longer, but injuries also led to his departure. Aside from the turnovers that keeps giving Tony a bad name and some early solid coaching from Bill Parcells, when has the current roster of a few play makers, coaching staff, defense or special teams bailed him out? It seems to me that Tony plays under more pressure to win or make a difference than Troy, Danny or even Roger had in their hey day. Troy was right to say that Tony is a much better athlete and can one day win a superbowl. Give Tony more help on defense and lets see what happens. If you put Tony in a balanced team with a solid offense to go with a solid defense like the Niners, Ravens, Packers, Steelers, Dallas would have more playoff wins and perhaps one or two more superbowls victories. Stop spreading useless water cooler media gossip and stick to the facts.
