Dallas Cowboys Should Sign Mike Jenkins to Contract Extension
Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins reportedly wants a contract extension from his team. Jenkins’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, contacted the Cowboys on Tuesday about a contract extension for his client. Jenkins will become a free agent at the end of the 2012 NFL season unless Dallas signs him to an extension. If Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones is wise, he’ll comply with Rosenhaus’ request.
When asked about Jenkins’ contract, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said “we like him,” but “you can’t pay everybody, at least right now.”
Jones likes to award contract extensions during training camp; cornerback Orlando Scandrick and defensive end Marcus Spears were each given extensions at that time last year, although neither deserved it. That means the same can be expected for Jenkins, who is a thousand times more deserving of a contract extension than Scandrick and Spears.
Garrett was correct in saying the Cowboys can’t pay everyone “right now.” Dallas has the 2012 NFL Draft coming up and needs to focus primarily on that and signing some more free agents this off-season. After all that is done and Jones knows exactly how much cap room the Cowboys are going to have over the next few years, then Jenkins should and will get his extension.
Jenkins had a stellar year in 2009, intercepting five passes and knocking down 19 others in just second NFL season. He took a step back in 2010, intercepting only 1 pass and knocking down 9 more while getting roasted deep by the likes of Tennessee Titans receiver Nate Washington.
Jenkins bounced back in 2011 while fighting through injuries. The South Florida product could not lift his separated right shoulder (which required off-season surgery) above his head, yet provided the lone bright spot in the Cowboys’ horrific secondary. Jenkins intercepted only one pass, becoming the type of shutdown corner that prevents opposing quarterbacks from throwing his direction.
Dallas signed former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr on the second day of free agency this off-season and Jones should sign Jenkins to an extension and ensure the two corners will be a dynamic duo for Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan for the next half-decade.
Lord knows Scandrick isn’t going to be a viable starter regardless of his lucrative contract extension. If Jones will award extensions to players like that, then surely he’ll do the same for Jenkins. If he truly wants to build a championship-caliber team like he says, Jenkins will be locked up for another five years by the time the 2012 NFL season starts.

Are you kidding? Its close to April Fools Day, right? Have you ever really watched Jenkins play? He doesn’t tackle, he’s out of position a lot of time. He is afraid to throw his body into the game. And its not because he was hurt, he’s a wimp.
Let Me c Brandon Carr,Mike Jenkins,Scandrick & Stephon Gilmore?
