The Dallas Cowboys lost to the San Diego Chargers on Saturday night but the final score wasn’t as important as the individual players. We needed to see how Morris Claiborne was going to play in his first NFL action, and of course, we needed to see the same old position battles we’ve been watching all preseason.
First let me say that the NFL Network didn’t show the game in my area until the middle of the second quarter so I only saw about two and a half quarters of football and I had some internet problems but here’s what I thought in the brief viewing.
The players who impressed:
Cole Beasley played extremerly well. He got snaps with each quarterback and put up some good numbers and in my mind, he’s the third receiver. He has the knack for finidng open spaces in the defense and seems very sure handed. We’ve seen what Kevin Ogletree can do for three years now and depsite having experience and a nice game last night he’s failed to seperate himself from Beasley.
Brandon Carr had himself a nice game picking off two passes. Although he was beaten on both interceptions, he did have nice recovery and better thrown balls would have beaten him. But when there are plays to be made, Carr made them, something this defense really needs.
Mario Butler played pretty well. He made some nice open field tackles and was good in coverage, it appears the Cowboys have found themselves a good young corner who can add some depth in the secondary.
The offensive line held together and did a nice job of protecting Tony Romo and Kyle Orton. David Arkin improved from last week and dare I say perhaps the Cowboys have found themselves a quality option in case Phil Costa can’t get healthy, or the job done. I’m not saying that Arkin is a pro bowl center but he has shown toughness and the ability to adapt to a new position in a short period of time. He needs to continue to improve but he’s shown signs of doing that and there is nothing wrong with having a versatile player of quality on your line.
Players that disappointed:
Stephen McGee stinks. Is there more you need to know? There is no need to see more from him, he is not an NFL quarterback. It’s been four years and he still hasn’t shown much, time to cut bait. Jason Garrett has stated he would like to keep three quarterbacks but there is no justification of keeping him.
Akwasi Owusu-Ansah appears pretty useless to me. He constantly gets beat and his time should be over in Dallas too.
Aside from that I thought the people who the fans and coaches were watching played well and the effort was good. They lost the game but came out of it healthy and that is a huge win for the Cowboys.
It’s a big week of practice this week and the biggest game of the preseason is next Saturday, let’s hope for the same improvement next week that we saw this week.
