Training camp is officially over and the Dallas Cowboys have returned to Texas. Many, including myself, will look back and remember this year’s training camp for one thing; the injuries.
At one point during training camp the Cowboys had 20 players who were unable to take the field due to injury. Luckily, the Cowboys managed to avoid any season ending injuries to the core of the team.
The Cowboys, first, dodged a bullet when MRI results on Dez Bryant’s knee came back negative for any structural damage and only revealed patella tendinitis. Bryant said he plans to play in the opener against the New York Giants “without a doubt.”
Miles Austin, who will miss the rest of the pre-season with a hamstring injury, is also making strides in recovery and should be ready to go for the season opener on September 5th.
It appeared that the team had dodged its second bullet, in as many days, when ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Wednesday that Jason Witten would not need surgery to repair the ruptured spleen, which has had him sidelined since the first pre-season game.
However, after hearing these reports Witten stated that those reports are incorrect, and that the doctors Schefter referred to hadn’t said anything to him.
Witten has been adamant about returning for the season opener against New York, but without being cleared and no actual timetable to go off of it’s best, for him and the team, that he continue to heal.
Losing Tony Romo’s go-to guy would be a hard pill to swallow for Dallas’ offense, which relies on him in both the run and passing game. Witten has become a staple in the Cowboys offense by accounting for 409 catches for 4,824 yards and 21 touchdowns since Romo became the starter in 2006.
I don’t want Witten on the field until doctors are 100% sure that he’s completely healthy, first and foremost for him and his family, and second for the team.
