Today is the day we found out who makes the 2012 Dallas Cowboys. Some of the names we already know, I’m guessing Tony Romo makes this team. Others we are waiting to find out about.
The Cowboys have released 21 names and they need to cut at least one more player to get to the 53 man roster. Some of the cuts have surprised me, including Adrian Hamilton, Orie Lemon, Danny Coale and Ron Leary. The Cowboys are thinking, I believe, they can sneak them onto the practice squad this weekend. If that is true, I just don’t understand the rationale. If you like a player, keep him. Don’t risk the chance that another team scoops up someone you like.
I also don’t understand the continued belief in Stephen McGee, who appears to be making the Cowboys for another season. He has done nothing to earn the spot on the roster and keeping him means they will, or have, released a player who is more capable of helping this team win. As I said last night, twitter may explode if McGee makes this team!
Other names you may recognize from the past month are Ben Bass, Rudy Carpenter, Teddy Williams, Pat McQuistan, Clifton Geathers and Daniel Loper.
Some of the players on the bubble that appear to be making the team are Mana Silva, Andre Holmes and Matt Johnson. Johnson, the rookie safety, has barely seen the field because of injury but the Cowboys obviously feel he can play. It seems odd the Cowboys would keep one rookie who’s had an injury derail his progress, Johnson, yet release another injured rookie, Coale, at a position where they need help.
The Cowboys also made a trade today, obtaining Ryan Cook from the Miami Dolphins for a 7th round draft pick in 2013. Cook is an offensive lineman who has a great deal of experience in playing each position along the offensive line. I don’t know how much he helps the Cowboys but he does have size, and even more valuable than that, he’s played a number of games at center.
Out of all these moves, the ones that have surprised me the most are Orie Lemon and Adrain Hamilton. Hamilton has shown flashes of being a very good pass rusher, he just needs some time to develop. Lemon, despite his interception return for a touchdown the other night and his special teams play, apparently lost out because the Cowboys do have solid players at linebacker.
I’m sorry, but either of those guys, and perhaps Coale, would have been a better option than McGee. If any of them are signed by another team the Cowboys will be kicking themselves.
Of course, the roster is not yet set since the deadline isn’t until later tonight but the Cowboys roster is close to being finished. There could be some more action to come though as players are being released all over the NFL. One of the most intruiging names on the market is former New England Patriots receiver Deion Branch, who was released today. If I were Andre Holmes, I wouldn’t be relaxing just yet.
After over a month of training camp and four preseason games, the Dallas Cowboys are close to being a team.

i like the idea of Branch. Much better than what they have.
