NFL Rumors: Brock Osweiler to be Backup in Denver
When the Denver Broncos drafted quarterback, Brock Osweiler in April the idea was that he would be the third quarterback and learn behind two veterans. The Broncos signed Caleb Haine in March and thought that he would be the perfect veteran backup to Peyton Manning. At this point, though, it would be a surprise if Haine even made the team. He has been the fourth best quarterback in camp; behind Manning, rookie Brock Osweiler and Adam Webber. Osweiler was drafted in the second round of last April’s draft as Manning’s successor in three or four years, but he is on track to be the Broncos backup quarterback this season.
The Broncos are playing it close to the vest by telling everyone that there is no “number two” right now, and all three will get their shot to win the job during the preseason. They can say that all they want but anyone who has watched the quarterbacks in camp is not buying it. You could make the argument that Webber has been the best of the three guys behind Manning but it’s difficult to believe that the Broncos brain trust would go with him as the number two guy. That leaves Haine and Osweiler and in that head-to-head competition, there is no competition.
In Saturday’s scrimmage at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, there was little doubt as to who was the better quarterback. Granted Haine was going against the first-team defense but he looked terrible. He was bothered by the rush, did not set his feet and missed open receivers. In contrast, Osweiler looked calm and often checked down to his third receiver after going through his progressions. Yes it was only an August scrimmage but rookie quarterbacks often struggle with reads and progressions early in their careers.
If all goes well for Brock Osweiler and the Broncos, the young signal caller from Arizona State won’t see any meaningful playing time for a few years, but there is little doubt that he is all ready the second best quarterback in camp. The team won’t say it but your backup quarterback for the 2012 Denver Broncos is going to be Brock Osweiler.
