Peyton Manning Impresses in Broncos Scrimmage
Peyton Manning made his debut at Sports Authority Field at Mile High on Saturday and he had some company. The Denver Broncos drew a record crowd for a scrimmage of over 41,000, most of who came out to see Manning. Manning came out of the locker room and heard roars that are usually reserved for playoff wins, but this was an early August practice. That’s the kind of excitement a future Hall of Famer can bring to a team and their fans. So how did he look, I am glad you asked.
In 7 on 7, a drill designed to work on the passing game, Manning went 6 for 6 including a picture perfect throw to wide receiver Andre Caldwell down the sideline for a touchdown. The throw was impressive by itself but the coverage was good on Caldwell, and Manning fit it in between the corner and the safety. The ball hit Caldwell right in the hands as he strolled into the end zone. Then came the actual scrimmage which saw Manning and the first team offense struggle on their first two series, including an interception. The offense got it going on the third drive and moved to the nine yard line where they faced a third and goal. Manning changed the play at the line of scrimmage and threw a perfect back shoulder fade to wide receiver, Eric Decker for the score.
That was all for Peyton Manning for the day but he showed the Bronco fans that his arm is ready to go. The most impressive throw of the day, however, was an incomplete pass. On the first play of the scrimmage, Manning threw a bomb down the middle of the field and overthrew wide receiver, Demaryius Thomas. The football traveled 60+ yards in the air and probably eased a lot of fans’ minds about Manning’s arm strength. Peyton Manning may not be back to where he was before the injury but he is more than good enough.
Saturday was only a scrimmage and it is only August 4th but Broncos’ fans have plenty of reasons to be excited for the 2012 season. Tim Tebow maybe gone to New York but the love for the Broncos was evident on Saturday.
