Could Brooking Signing Spell the End For Denver Broncos Williams?
The Denver Broncos all offseason have been looking to improve their 19th ranked defense from 2011. This trend has continued into training camp with the signing of safety/punt returner Jim Leonhard and now LB Keith Brooking, a fifteen year veteran who started three games for the Dallas Cowboys last year. Somehow, this seems like a prelude to slowly wean the troubled, yet talented LB D.J. Williams off the roster sometime during his six game suspension for failing a drug test to start the season.
Williams has had many off the field troubles over the past five years culminating in this suspension and has not become the leader that most would have projected. This may be the perfect opportunity for the Broncos to shed this veteran while the emergence of Wesley Woodyard and the signing of Brooking will clearly fill the need at the linebacker position. Head Coach John Fox will be getting a proven veteran with leadership abilities who will be a quality backup to Woodyard for at least the first six games.
If Woodyard can produce while filling in for Williams, look for Executive VP John Elway to shop him, or put him through waivers. Williams may find himself in a new uniform come the middle of October. Brooking has been cleared to begin practicing with the team on Saturday.
In other Broncos news:
Demaryius Thomas and the Broncos had a scare when the WR Achilles began tightening up. Lindsay Jones of The Denver Post tweeted today:
Also, with the revealing of the depth chart today, it is evident that some players such as RB Knowshon Moreno, WR Greg Orton and QB Adam Weber may be on the ropes when the roster is finalized. I was also surprised to see that mainstay DE Robert Ayers was displaced by Jason Hunter. That will be an interesting battle to watch the rest of the preseason.
