With anticipation growing in Motown for the home team Lions first Monday Night Football game in a decade Detroit fans are ready. The game sold out in less than an hour a few months back before the Lions were even off to the start that they are now.

A great deal of pride has spread throughout not only the city of Detroit, but also the state of Michigan. To Detroit fans, this has been a long time coming.

Lion’s fans have been through a decade of “hell” to put it bluntly. Fans suffered as the team went through coach after coach, while continuing to lose on the field.

The Matt Millen era was a huge failure that left a black eye on the city and the franchise. Millen sent the team into purgatory instead of making them a competitive team.

Detroit fans thought that Millen must have had a secret vendetta against the franchise because that would be the only plausible excuse for his running of the team.

It was often said as a bit of sarcasm in the streets of Detroit that Millen never saw a wide receiver he did not like. A point that was hard to argue considering the Charles Rogers, Roy Williams, and Mike Williams draft picks.

Millen did get it right on one receiver to be fair and that is current star Calvin Johnson, but not much else. The new regime has done away with looking at the past and focused on the future.

Coach Jim Schwartz has often said that he did not want to make a big point of speaking about the 0-16 season that preceded his tenure. Since Schwartz has come on board and with the help of General Manager Martin Mayhew the team has begun to build a team based on needs as opposed to names.

As a result the Lions have brought in draft picks like Matthew Stafford, Jahvid Best, Ndamukong Suh, Nick Fairley, and Titus Young. The Lions have learned from their previous mistakes and are concentrating on building a solid team on both sides of the ball.

The young Lions currently feature a high impact offense and defensive line that are among the league’s best. We heard a lot about the word change in 2008. Little did we know it was the Detroit Lions that would change?
