Detroit Tigers: What to Watch For this Homestand

Andrew Weber-US PRESSWIRE

The Detroit Tigers open up a seven game home stand tonight. Starting off against the Cleveland Indians, and then finishing off the home stand against the New York Yankees.

After a 3-7 road trip, there are a few things every Tigers fan should be looking out for this home stand.

Anibal Sanchez: Sanchez made his Tigers debut against Toronto over the road trip. Sanchez went six innings and surrendered five runs against the Jays. Tonight will be the first time Sanchez will be pitching in the home whites. Watch to see if he can have a bounce back start.

Andy Dirks: Today Dirks will be making his return to the line up for the  first time since May. Dirks was a key piece in the Tigers’ line up earlier in the season, and will provide another productive left handed bat in the line up. Dirks will be batting sixth in his return.

Justin Verlander: Verlander had a road trip to forget. In Verlander’s first start on the road trip, he went six innings of one hit baseball against the Indians before he collapsed in the seventh and the Indians tagged Verlander up for four runs. Then in Boston he was fighting the elements, but had a start Tiger fans are not used to seeing out of their ace. Verlander would lose his streak of 63 straight games of pitching six innings because of the rain shortened game. He would also suffer his second consecutive loss. Verlander will bounce back this home stand.

Offense: Before the Tigers went on their nine game road trip, they had won five straight games and were clicking on all cylinders. The Tigers’ offense went from scoring 5.2 runs over their last eight games to just 2.2 runs over the road trip. In the last game in Boston the offense seemed to perk up, thanks to three home runs and some timely hitting. Hopefully the friendly confines of Comerica Park will help the Tigers’ bats heat up once more.

White Sox: The Tigers went  7-1 over their last home stand and took over first place from the White Sox. Only being 2.5 games out of first, and how well the Tigers play at home; this maybe the perfect time for the Tigers to string some wins together and get back into first. Just have to hope for some White Sox losses.
