What We Learned: NFL Preseason Week 2

Let’s get right to it:

–I’ll admit that I love C.J. Spiller. At Clemson, he was unstoppable. He ran fast, juked everyone out, and made impossible catches.  I’ve spent way too much time watching highlights on Youtube over and over.  After Thursday, I finally have a new one to watch.  Spiller burst through the Colts defensive line, put a move on the linebacker and outran all the defensive backs for a 31-yard touchdown.  With Marshawn Lynch and Fred Jackson sidelined with injuries, Spiller has a ton of upside. There will be lots of highlights from him this season, which is good for me, and definitely good for fantasy owners.

–Wes Welker finally took the field against the Falcons on Thursday night.  Brady wasted no time hitting his favorite target. Welker caught 2 passes for 20 yards on the first two passing plays of the game.  Those are fair Welker numbers.  During the regular season, when Welker plays a full game, you can multiply both of those numbers by 5.

–Another interesting side story is the two rookie Patriot tight ends, Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski, both caught four passes and a touchdown.  These are both very talented tight ends, but giving Brady even more offensive weapons seems unfair.

–The Ravens defense came up huge against the Redskins. Donovan McNabb got off to a good start driving to the redzone, but they were forced to kick a field goal.  The Ravens defense proceeded to force four turnovers and pull off a pretty slick fake punt that netted a total of 51 yards on the play.

–As the media buzzed about Roethlisberger’s return to the field, Ahmad Bradshaw ran very hard, netting 28 yards on 6 carries and a touchdown.  Keep an eye on Bradshaw as he slowly takes over the starting job in New York.

–Victor Cruz followed up his impressive performance last week with just 30 yards on two receptions, which isn’t too bad for preseason.

–Not that you were going to draft Josh Freeman, but if you were, you are going to have to find someone else to fill your roster. Freeman was sidelined with a fractured thumb during their game against the Chiefs.

–Chad Henne went all Chadddd Henneeeee on the Jaguars, throwing for 151 yards and 2 touchdowns. To top that off, he was 11-of-14.  If you remember, Henne destroyed the Jaguars last season too (sensing a trend?).  His two touchdowns were to tight end, Anthony Fasano. Brandon Marshall set up an impressive block to free the freakishly fast Fasano up the sideline for a 55 yard touchdown reception.  Marshall looked like he was back to normal, catching 4 passes for 65 yards after dropping two passes last week.

–On the other side of the ball, Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker posted 65 yards on just 3 catches.

–The Texans faced the Saints in the Superdome on Saturday, and Saints’ backup quarterback Chase Daniels came to play.  He threw for 3 touchdowns and 182 yards after Brees struggled in the first quarter. Reggie Bush got a lot of touches, averaging 7 yards a carry with a TD.  If this is any indication of how the Saints plan to use Bush, he is way more valuable in fantasy.

–The Texans continue to struggle at running back.  With the loss of rookie Ben Tate, they looked at Arian Foster to shoulder the load, but he ended up coughing up the ball. What is it with these Texans running backs and their fumbling??

–The Raiders are 2-0 in the preseason. Their defense was very tough, and so was their special teams, scoring off of a muffed punt and blocking a punt for a safety. The Raider Nation is rejoicing.  I can only imagine that all the hardware stores in Oakland are sold out of silver and black paint as every one is preparing for what could be their best season since the Rich Gannon era. Even I might order a skeleton mask and a set of spiky “Mad Max” style shoulder pads and ride this bandwagon.

–However in the Bears’ game against the Raiders, Matt Forte was able to pull off a huge 89 yard touchdown run, adding to his total of 109 yards on just 5 carries.  He looks way faster than he was last year with the injuries nagging him.  A fully healthy Forte has a lot of potential, and he proved that this week.

–In San Diego, rookie Ryan Mathews continues to shine with 53 rushing yards on 12 carries against the Cowboys.  In the air, Philip Rivers proved that he doesn’t need Vincent Jackson to put up numbers while throwing balls up to Malcom Floyd and rookie Seyi Ajirotutu.

–The Cowboys came away with the win, however.  One of the scores was to Miles Austin, who made a very nice catch along the side of the endzone.

–Is Matt Stafford a Top Ten quarterback? Top 15, even? I’m not quite sold yet.  He did look like a Top Ten guy this past week, throwing for 130 yards and a spectacular TD to Calvin Johnson.  Stafford has a ton of potential and could be a huge sleeper pick in your draft.

–After being sidelined with a minor injury, Ryan Grant took the field, gaining just 19 yards, but the big story was backup running back Brandon Jackson. Sure, we could talk about how great Aaron Rodgers looked, but that’s no surprise.  Brandon Jackson did, however, surprise the Seahawks defense by faking up the left on an inside handoff and the bouncing around the Seahawks defensive end for a quick 26 yard gain, adding to his total of 80 yards.

–While the Packers were running like a well-oiled machine, the Seahawks’ Matt Hasselbeck looked like he was fighting to keep his starting spot, which he actually might be. Hasselbeck had only four incompletions with 127 yards and a TD.  He looked very good out there.

–We could drone on and on about Favre and analyze the whopping four plays that he played, but we wont. His ankle looked fine, and he threw just one pass.

–While everyone focused on Favre, I was focusing on 49ers backup quarterback Nate Davis.  What you need to know about Davis is that he is extremely mobile, has a quick throwing motion and a canon for an arm.  What’s not to like? I watched this play at least five times: he rolled out and, standing in the endzone, bombs a pass to Ted Ginn Jr. for a 60 yard gain.  The pass sailed from his own endzone to the opposite 36, 64 yards in the air. It looked like John Elway throwing a Vortex football. I loved it.

Next week, get ready for more preseason action, or inaction, depending on how you want to look at it.
