Start These Guys and Sit Those Dudes: Week 2

Every respectable fantasy site has a “Start ’em, sit ’em” section for each week. This is our first of this kind of post, and I hope this helps blaze your trail to victory. Each week, we’ll give you five “sure-fire fantasy studs” to start and five “guaranteed to fail” players to bench.

Start these guys!

Malcom Floyd and Legedu Naanee WRs San Diego Chargers

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a pathetic secondary. CB Rashean Mathis allowed 10 TDs alone last year when he was thrown at just 55 times. On the other side of the field, his fellow CB Derek Cox allowed 8 TDs when thrown at 107 times. These two both ranked in the top 4 of the most TDs allowed last year. Both Floyd and Naanee should have a field day with their height advantage. Derek Cox and Rashean Mathis are just 6-1 and Floyd and Naanee are 6-5 and 6-2, respectively. Expect the Chargers to pile it on.

Michael Vick QB Philadelphia Eagles

We all saw last week that Vick has a lot still left in his tank. He rushed for 103 yards and threw for 175 yards. Keep in mind that he went into that game thinking he was only going to be used in gadget plays and in the wildcat formation. This week, he will match up against the Detroit Lions who were ranked 4th worst against the pass and 6th worst against the run last season. Vick can be a threat on both of these fronts. Fantasy owners who picked Vick up after last week should be in for a huge week.

Darren McFadden RB Oakland Raiders

I know I’ve already discussed how great McFadden looked last week, but let’s revisit it. Michael Bush is out with a thumb injury and has been ruled out again this week. McFadden will line up against the St. Louis Rams this week and this has all the makings of a Darren McFlurry of yardage. Last week alone, he had 150 all-purpose yards and a TD. As long as he’s healthy and not sharing the carries with Michael Bush, McFadden is a must start.

Ray Rice RB Baltimore Ravens

Not that you weren’t going to start Rice anyway, but last year Rice rushed for 278 yards and 2 TDs in his two matchups against the Bengals. With his poor outing in the season opener, expect Rice to have an explosive game against the Bengals.

DeAngelo Williams RB Carolina Panthers

In his last two matchups against the Bucs, Williams has rushed for 338 yards and 4 TDs. So yes, start Williams.

Sit these dudes!

Randy Moss WR New England Patriots

I don’t really like to buy into the whole Revis Island hype. Historically, though, Darrelle Revis and the Jets’ defense has shut down Randy Moss, even calling him a “Slouch.” If you have a better option, Moss should stay on your bench this week.

C.J. Spiller RB Buffalo Bills

Last week, Spiller put up pathetic numbers, proving that it must be impossible to be a good running back in Buffalo. The Bills haven’t had anyone as talented as Spiller in the backfield since Thurman Thomas, but with the team that is currently around him, I expect that he will continue to stay grounded. I definitely do not like the matchup. Green Bay’s LB Clay Matthews will be in his kitchen all day long.

Mike Williams WR Seattle Seahawks

I know I told you to pick up both Mike Williams’ last week, but this week you should plan on sitting Seattle’s Mike Williams. He will be matched up against statistically the best CB in the game in Champ Bailey. Bailey was thrown at 98 times last year and allowed 0 TDs. Don’t expect Williams to be the exception. Wait a minute, why doesn’t Bailey have an island??

Carson Palmer QB Cincinnati Bengals

I was thoroughly impressed with Carson Palmer last week as he put up monster numbers against the Patriots. There is a ton of buzz surrounding the Ravens who shut down the Jets offense last week, but this week, we will see whether the Jets offense is really that terrible or whether the Ravens defense is that tough. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, I think Palmer will find out the hard way.

Owen Daniels TE Houston Texans

I’m not going to hide my admiration for the explosive Houston TE Owen Daniels, but this week, he will be facing the Redskins who limited Dallas TE Jason Witten to just three catches for 27 yards last week. Daniels still remains the starting TE in Houston, but he is also still recovering from his knee surgery last year. Until he is fully healthy, Daniels will spend plenty of time on the sidelines and should be spending plenty of time on your bench.
