Start These Guys and Sit Those Dudes: Week 3

I try to stay humble, but I want to brag a little about my start/sit post last week. Almost everyone I picked did exactly what I said they would do. I did, however, recommend sitting Randy Moss who wound up decent yards and a TD, but you probably wouldn’t bench him anyway, right? There are a few wild ones in this week, so check it out:
Start these Guys:
Michael Vick
Last week, Philip Rivers enjoyed picking apart Jacksonville’s secondary and Mike Tolbert enjoyed busting through their D-line. I’d imagine that Michael Vick will have a lot of fun this Sunday.
Brett Favre
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Brett has looked terrible, but he’s still Brett Favre. He is going to come back in a big way this week. Don’t give up hope in him just yet. In his career, he has thrown 57 TDs against the Detroit Lions, which is second most to the Chicago Bears (58). And he averages 257.4 yards per game with those gaudy score totals. If he can get at least those stats, we can call it a comeback.
Dez Bryant
Everyone is raving about this Dallas Cowboys-Houston Texans matchup as being a “Texas Shoot Out.” I’ll buy into that, but my money is on Dez Bryant being the best bet to put up the most fantasy points from this game. He looks a lot more polished than most rookies and with his dual ability to score on punt returns and receptions, Bryant should have a huge week this week.
Correll Buckhalter
This may be one of my gutsiest predictions, but let’s make some assumptions using the transitive property. Follow me here: if Arian Foster can rip up the Indianapolis Colts to the tune of 231 yards and if Ahmad Bradshaw can average 5.2 yards per carry when he was allowed touches in the “Manning Bowl,” then Buckhalter should do more of the same, right? Buckhalter will be splitting carries with Laurence Maroney after the news that Knowshon Moreno will be benched for a few weeks with an undisclosed injury. So why Buckhalter over Maroney? Because Buckhalter has already seen goal line touches this season, and will continue to do so. Maroney is a new addition to the team, and Buckhalter has been with the team for two years now. Plus, I’ve always liked him–he averages 4.6 yards a carry for his career. That and I’m starting him in my flex spot, so we can share in the pain together if it doesn’t work out.
Cincinnati Bengals Defense
The Bengals Defense often gets lost in the AFC North as everyone is quick to compliment the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens. Last week, the Bengals forced Joe “Cool” Flacco to throw 4 picks (subsequently killing my fantasy team). Flacco is known for his poise in the pocket, Jimmy Clausen, who will be making his first career NFL start, is not. Talk about trial by fire.
Sit these Dudes:
Josh Freeman
I do really love the underdog Buccaneers in Tampa, but I can’t see Josh Freeman holding on to his pristine passer rating matching up against the Steelers this week. Still hold on to him, though. With the right matchups, Freeman can be a great start, just not this week.
Jay Cutler
Sorry to be a buzz kill on Jay here, even as my colleague pumps him up. I know he just came off of a great fantasy game against the Dallas Cowboys last week, but the Packers defense will terrorize Cutler all day. You can definitely assume that Cutler will air it out, but it won’t be a pretty performance. If you have a better matchup, go with it.
Jamaal Charles
I will never understand why he is the No. 2 back in Kansas City. I am lucky to not have him on my fantasy team, because I don’t know if I could stomach the pure disrespect that Charles is getting. Couple his new role behind Thomas Jones with the fact that they are facing the 49ers’ stingy defense and I don’t see Charles doing much.
Michael Crabtree
I loved Crabtree in college, but I don’t love him in the NFL and I definitely don’t love him against the Chiefs’ surprisingly solid defense this week.
Shonn Greene
I can’t reiterate how overrated Shonn Greene was at the beginning of the season. LaDainian Tomlinson has been gobbling up the carries in New York, limiting Green to just 20 carries and 70 yards total after two games with two receptions for 17 yards. And ZERO scores. Toss in his lost fumble and you have yourself a 1st-2nd round pick that has totaled just 6 points in two weeks, an average of just three per game. Translation: STAY AWAY. The New York Jets are facing the Miami Dolphins this week and judging by Miami’s goal line stand against Adrian Peterson last week, Greene definitely wont be able to get by them.
There are lots of injuries and changes to depth charts this week, so double-check everything before finalizing your lineup. Good luck.
