Buy Or Sell? – Is Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray Legit?
Tim Heitman-US PRESSWIRE

When fans think of the Dallas Cowboys, they often think of Hall-Of-Fame running backs such as Emmitt Smith and Tony Dorsett.

After Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray galloped to a franchise-record 253 yards on 25 carries in a 34-3 victory over the St Louis Rams, the soft-spoken rookie out of Oklahoma would not join the storied ranks of both Smith and Dorsett in Cowboys history, but also put himself on the radar of fantasy football owners everywhere after his breakout performance.

The 6’0 224-pound back would score an incredible 31 points in—ESPN standard league scoring—and notch the second best number of fantasy points for running backs, trailing only Houston Texans running back Arian Foster’s  40.

The question that fantasy football owners are asking now is that if Murray of for real?

With the Cowboys attempting to trade running back Tashard Choice and the ankle injury to starter Felix Jones—who did not practice on Wednesday, it appears that Murray may be in prime position to pull a Miles Austin-type of impact for fantasy owners in 2011.

While the St Louis Rams are generous to opposing running backs in 2011, the rest of the Cowboys schedule sets up nice for Murray to really go on a serious rampage.

Murray will face the 23rd ranked run defense of the rival Eagles twice in Week 8 and 16, while the 11th ranked Seahawks run defense in Week 9 may present him a bit of a challenge, the 17th ranked run defense of the arch-rival Redskins on the road in Week 11 and a juicy match-up against the Bills 30th ranked defense in Week 10 at home will even things out.

Murray will also have favorable match-ups against the likes of the Dolphins and Cardinals in Weeks 12 and 13 before facing the 27th ranked run defense of the New York Giants in weeks 14 and 17, with a juicy matchup against the 22nd ranked Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 15.

For fantasy owners of Jones, they not only face the real thought of Murray usurping Jones’ top running back spot in Dallas, but—even worse—a timeshare that would cut into his carries, thus making him expendable.

In the case of Murray, the sky could possibly be the limit for fantasy owners.

Owners should buy wisely knowing that with Murray’s favorable matchups late in the season during championship weeks, that he will pay off big down the road.
