Brandon Jacobs: Must Start Running Back

Breaking news: Ahmad Bradshaw has a fractured foot and will be out indefinitely. You know what that means…Brandon Jacobs is set to reassume his past role as the New York Giants starting running back.

Brandon Jacobs was the lead back in New York during the 2008 and 2009 seasons respectively. Ahmad Bradshaw didn’t come into the picture on a regular basis until 2010, when Jacobs started just five of 16 games that season. In 2008, Jacobs was a horse, rushing for 1,089 yards on just 219 carries. Jacobs rushed for 5.0 yards per carry, while blasting into the endzone 15 times in ’08. The next season was not as productive, but resepctable with a trio of Giant backs to contend with.

This is just the second time in Jacobs career with the Giants that he will be the lone dog. With Bradshaw out of the picture, this is Brandon’s opportunity to shine once again in the New York offense. In 2008, he was the featured back and his numbers illustrated what a force he is to bring down, amassing 5.0 yards per carry. Right now, he will have the same chance to recapture his 2008 days. The Giants offensive line is stellar and Eli’s passing game will definitely keep defenders honest. It is a perfect fit for the tank that is Brandon Jacobs.

The question remains, is Jacobs ready to handle the load at this stage in his career? I believe he still has a lot of juice left in the tank. The last few seasons have not nearly been as straining on the big running back. He took a pounding in 2008, and that’s why Coughlin supplied him with two back-ups in the 2009 season. Good thing for fantasy owners is we don’t need Jacobs beyond this season. All we need is a workhorse running back for the final eight games of the fantasy season and then we’re done with him. Fantasy owners would love to use and abuse Jacobs, while getting him on the cheap. If he is not already on your roster, go and get him obviously. He should be available is some free agent pools.

If he is owned however, make sure you throw that owner a quick trade offer. Maybe they don’t know what just happened because they’ve been sleeping at work or something. My piece of advice: You have to get him this week before he plays! After his game Sunday, he may be untouchable by most owners standards if he has an above average game. You could of just found yourself a No. 2 running back for the rest of the season. Those don’t come around very often. Do what you can to get him, if you already don’t have Jacobs.
