Breaking News: McFadden, Hillis Out Week 9
Darren McFadden and Peyton Hillis have both been officially ruled out of Sunday’s games, respectively. If you weren’t prepared for these decisions, you have to make a quick judgement of a free agent player and plan accordingly. The midpoint of the NFL season is usually when players start going down with injury more frequently. Whether the team is good or bad, coaches and staff do not want to rush their priority players back to action before they’re ready. Especially with playoff teams like the Raiders who have another game coming up four days after Sunday’s contest against Denver, they’re in no rush to hurry back their star running back.
News came out on Friday, hours after their teams’ practices. Apparently, Hillis’ injury appears to be more serious, but obviously what do we know about his situation this season? Team sources said Peyton Hillis re-inured the hamstring at Friday’s practice, which would be the second time this season he has re-inured himself in practice before a game. Looming reports around the team are saying Hillis’ agent has a lot to do with the direction of the RB’s season. If you need a replacement for this week from the Browns, it should be Chris Ogbonnaya. With Montario Hardesty ailing as well, Ogbonnaya offers you the best chance of anyone in the Browns putrid backfield.
This is pretty much the version of a midseason holdout for Hillis. He missed a game earlier this season with strep throat. Are you kidding me? A football player missing a game due to strep throat? Aside from the ongoing “Madden Jinx,” I can’t say I understand how Hillis’ season spiraled out of control so fast. It’s sad to see a real deal, one-hit-wonder.
Darren McFadden is the opposite of a one-hit-wonder, as he will be inactive this week for precationary reasons. The Raiders have another game scheduled for Thursday night, after their game Sunday with the Broncos. Oakland certainly wants McFadden healthy and ready to rumble against division-foe San Diego. Does that mean Oakland doesn’t respect the Tebow-led Broncos enough to play McFadden? Regardless, the workhorse will not be active Sunday, but should be back for Thursday’s game. This is not a good sign either way. The Raiders are coming off a bye week, indicating that McFadden was unable to get healthy over a long period of time. I’ll keep you posted. Nevertheless, if Michael Bush isn’t available on the waiver wire, find a one-week replacement with a chance to pop this Sunday. Someone like Javon Ringer or the previously mentioned Chris Ogbonnaya.
Andre Johnson is also ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Johnson had a setback in Monday’s practice when he pushed the hamstring a little too far. There is no timetable on the return of the Texans star. Owen Daniels, Jacoby Jones and Joel Dressen are in line for bigger roles and Jones and Dressen are must-add’s. However, the Browns passing defense has been good this year, so look for a heavy dose of Arian Foster.
Hakeem Nicks is listed as doubtful for Sunday’s game against New England. The wide receiver is once again having issues with his hamstring, which has plagued him in all three seasons of his NFL career. If Nicks were unable to play, New York would be in jeopardy of playing without their starting running back in Bradshaw and wide receiver in Nicks. Victor Cruz’ production looks to take a leap for the next week, as does Brandon Jacobs and Mario Manningham’s.
