The Detroit Lions have not cleared running back Jahvid Best to return to the playing field. Best was put on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. This latest setback means that he will start training camp on the sidelines.
There is still a chance that Best will be in training camp and ready for the NFL season since he can be activated once he is cleared. If he is not medically cleared before the season starts he will have to sit out the first six games on the PUP list.
The setback also creates issues in fantasy football drafts as well. Fantasy players will have to realize that Best is probably even more of a risk than he was initially thought to be.
Best has been out of action since suffering a concussion in week six of the 2011 season. The latest injury occurred against the San Francisco 49ers even though he has struggled with concussion issues in both his pro and collegiate days.
The Lions are obviously being careful with their young running back. Fantasy players should be careful about considering Best as a sleeper draft pick until he can prove he is ready to play and sustain the pounding that NFL RB’s take.
One has to wonder if Jahvid Best will ever return to form. Premature “retirement” rumors are already circling in the media. Only time will tell if he will be able to in week one against the St. Louis Rams.
Whatever the case may be, just be careful when considering adding Best to your fantasy team.
