The 2012 fantasy football season is right around the corner, making this the perfect time to start obsessing over player rankings. Below is my full fantasy football report for tight ends for the upcoming fantasy season:
Top-Ten Rankings:
1. Rob Gronkowski, NE – Rob “Gronkenstein” Gronkowski had a monstrous 2011 campaign. He caught an NFL tight end record, 17 touchdowns, and “Gronk” is absolutely impossible to cover on the red-zone. He can catch anything thrown at him and has some of the biggest hands in the entire league. Gronkowski may not haul in 17 touchdowns in 2011, but fantasy owners should expect another insane fantasy season from the kid from Western New York.
2. Jimmy Graham, NO – Graham went from being a fantasy unknown a couple years ago; to being the number one target for Pro Bowl quarterback, Drew Brees, last season. Graham has amazing athletic ability and the former basketball player is impossible for any cornerback to cover in the red-zone.
3. Jason Witten, DAL – Witten has hauled in a phenomenal 14 touchdowns over the last two seasons and has become a great weapon for quarterback Tony Romo to look for in the middle of the field. Witten has also averaged an amazing 1,104 receiving yards over the last five seasons. He is one of the best at his position and remains one of the safest fantasy picks in any format.
4. Vernon Davis, SF – Davis has struggled with consistency over the last several seasons. He caught 13 touchdowns in 2009, then only combined to catch 13 touchdowns over his last two full seasons. However, the team’s offense really turned it around by the end of the last year, which was evident by Davis catching an insane 292 yards and 4 touchdowns in San Fran’s two playoff games. Davis is finally a top-tier tight end again, so expect him to haul in between 8-10 touchdowns in 2012.
5. Antonio Gates, SD – Gates has missed 9 games over the last two years and the 32-year old is finally entering the downside of his amazing NFL career. However, the veteran still can be drafted as a starter in fantasy leagues, just not as the first tight end he was drafted as in 2007.
6. Aaron Hernandez, NE – Hernandez has become a reliable fantasy option on the other side of superstar tight end, Rob Gronkowski. While “Gronk” may be the dominant red-zone target, Hernandez is stronger at moving the chains. Hernandez is still a reliable option that can easily reach 1,000 receiving yards and 6 touchdowns.
7. Jermichael Finley, GB – Finley is the best route running tight end in the league and runs them with the grace of a wideout. Finley also has the advantage of catching passes from the best quarterback in the game and his amazing support in fast will only give him more room to work with in the middle of the field.
8. Tony Gonzalez, ATL – Gonzalez has really shined since coming down to “Hot-lanta”. Gonzalez has only missed two games in his entire 15-year career and has become a weapon for quarterback, Matt Ryan, to rely on week in and week out. “Gonzo” is a guaranteed 600 yards and 6-8 touchdowns each year.
9. Fred Davis, WSH – The Redskins are dedicated to getting Davis the ball anyway they can. They have him running routes, blocking, and even have him lining up out of the backfield. Davis responded by catching a career-high 59 receptions and 796 receiving yards last year, so fantasy owners are expecting big things from him in 2012.
10. Brandon Pettigrew, DET – Pettigrew was the primary benefactor of quarterback Matthew Stafford’s career season, as the tight end racked up 777 yards and 5 touchdowns. He may not repeat his 2011 numbers, but he can easily be a reliable fantasy option in deeper leagues.
