In the Super Bowl, anyone can come from obscurity and become a household name. This year, it very well could be running back LaMichael James.

The veteran Frank Gore has had enjoyed an outstanding fantasy football season for the San Francisco 49ers in 2012 with nine touchdowns, 1,214 yards and a 4.7 yards per carry (YPC) average. One of the keys to his success was the Niners using fresh legs to spell Gore and give him rest from time to time. For much of the season, it was running back Kendall Hunter, who did a nice job keeping Gore healthy and mobile.

All of this time, the rookie out of Oregon didn’t play. However, once Hunter went down for the season with an Achilles injury and Brandon Jacobs couldn’t stay on the field, it was James who the Niners turned to.

In four games in December, James didn’t score, but ran for 125 yards on 27 carries (4.6 YPC) to cement himself as Gore’s backup throughout the playoffs. In his first postseason game, LJ was used sparingly in a somewhat easy win over the  Green Bay Packers. In the NFC Championship game, however, James ran for 34 yards and a score on just five carries, showing some great burst in the red zone. James has truly showed his fantasy potential towards the end of the season.

While Gore has obviously received the bulk of the carries, James has proven to be a valuable asset who cannot only keep their aging starter at the top of his game, but can break off a big play any time he touches the ball. James also hasn’t lost a fumble yet in his young career, which will only keep him on the field more.

James will make a name for himself by scoring a touchdown and breaking off a few big runs in Super Bowl XLVII for fantasy owners.
