2013 Fantasy Football: Don’t Sleep On TE Jason Witten

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

With all the struggles from the Dallas Cowboys in 2012, many fantasy football owners won’t be drafting many of them in 2013. However, there are several players that can still hold value for fantasy owners.

One of the more obvious options would be TE Jason Witten. He is an eight-time Pro Bowler, yet for some reason is being somewhat ignored this fantasy off-season.

In Witten’s first three games of 2012, he caught just eight of his 21 targets. He was averaging more drops per game than catches and the tight end looked visibly off his game. Witten averaged just 25.3 yards per contest and fantasy owners were seriously doubting his fantasy worth.

To his credit, Witten was dealing with a nasty spleen injury throughout the preseason and came into the regular season out of shape. It took Witten some time, but once he started to get his legs underneath him, he quickly started to see his fantasy value improve. Witten actually ended up leading all tight ends in receptions and receiving yards last year. He hauled in a career-high 110 balls and his 1,039 receiving yards ranked him 20th in the league.

The only negative from Witten last year was that he scored just three touchdowns, which was his lowest total since 2009. However, the Cowboys weren’t exactly dominating the NFC and touchdowns were hard to come by. The Boys’ offense will be much more efficient in 2013 with everyone coming back healthy, so expect an uptick in fantasy value across the board.

Witten will once again be a top-tier tight end this season, so don’t let him fall outside of the top-five at the position. He is a yardage monster and will be good for 60-80 yards a game.
