With all the attention that Tampa Bay Rays OF Desmond Jennings receives for being an amazing base stealer, he is rarely talked about as being a power hitter.
His speed has been well documented by fantasy baseball owners for some time, as the outfielder’s name has been tossed around roto-league circles for years. He already has five steals on the year and should easily finish among the American League leaders by the end of the season.
Unexpectedly though, the speedster has really shown some power this season. He has already blasted two home runs, but he has even added a respectable six doubles. He is getting solid contact in almost every at-bat and has been the team’s spark in the early part of the year.
The 26-year-old is still growing as a major league hitter, so he won’t finish anywhere close to 30 home runs in 2013. His added power is still a step in the right direction, though, because his career-highs are just 13 homers and 19 doubles in 2012.
Jennings was even praised recently by manager, Joe Maddon, who said that his center fielder is maturing into a great leadoff hitter. Jennings is finally living up to his enormous fantasy hype and the 26-year-old could still develop into a top-20 outfielder.
Jennings can still be viewed as a strong second or third outfielder, but he is a player with tremendous upside. He will easily finish with over 40 stolen bases, but his value will go through the roof if he can add around 20-25 home runs.
