2013 Fantasy Baseball: 1B Anthony Rizzo Having Breakout Season

Benny Sieu-USA TODAY Sports

One of the biggest breakout performances this far into the 2013 fantasy baseball season has been from Chicago Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo.

I wrote in an article earlier this year that this would be Rizzo’s breakout fantasy season and I couldn’t have been more correct. Rizzo is currently scoring like a top-five first baseman and has outperformed some of the bigger names at the position.

Rizzo hit just 15 home runs in 87 games in 2012, but he has quietly already hit nine home runs in 32 games this season. He also has 25 RBIs on the year, which currently ranks him sixth in the National League. He may be hitting a meager .262, but his power numbers have more than made up for the low average.

Rizzo has even stolen four bases and could easily finish with around 20 this year. He may not lead the NL in stolen bases anytime soon, but any first baseman that can record over 10 steals is a productive option on the base path.

It is hard to imagine Rizzo getting even hotter from the plate, but it appears he actually has. The 23-year-old has 16 hits in the last nine games, including seven doubles and one home run. He is hitting everything right now and is currently one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball.

Rizzo has shown that he can be a reliable fantasy first baseman in all formats this season. He is the ultimate keeper at first base and the youngster will be anchoring fantasy rosters for the next several seasons.
