2013 Fantasy Baseball: SP Tim Lincecum Still Not Safe To Start

Chris Humphreys-USA TODAY Sports

After an absolutely embarrassing 2012 fantasy baseball season, San Francisco Giants SP Tim Lincecum was a very popular sleeper this spring. Most expected him to rebound and have another stellar season in San Fran. However, the two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has once again disappointed this fantasy season and is in the middle of another awful season.

Lincecum has a miserable 4-5 record to go along with 4.75 ERA this year. He also has an appalling 1.39 WHIP, which has proven to be practically worthless for fantasy owners. He has only won two of his starts in the last eight outings and Lincecum has been the ultimate hit-or-miss fantasy pitcher this year. Just when you think he is about to turn the corner on his poor season, the fireballer gets beat up for six earned runs.

One reason for the drastic decline in his fantasy numbers could have to do with his heater. In 2011, Lincecum was averaging a very respectable 92.3 MPH on his fastball. However, last year he averaged just 90.4 MPH and this season that number has fallen down to 90.2 MPH. He is clearly getting fatigued more in his seventh season and his funky delivery could be a major reason for his mid-career slump.

Lincecum obviously deserves a roster spot still, but the former All-Star just isn’t reliable fantasy option anymore. He should truly only get a start when he pitches twice in a scoring period, other than that, Big Time Timmy Jim is simply too risky to start week after week.
