Fantasy baseball fans are always looking for the hot, young stick to add off the waiver wire. It may been a very limited sample size, but Chicago Cubs’ Junior Lake appears to be the next prospect to take a shot on.
The 23-year-old was called up to replace Brian Bogusevic’s spot in the outfield, as the veteran was recently placed on the 15-day DL with a hamstring injury. Lake was performing well at Triple-A Iowa before the call and had a .295/ .341/.462 slash line.
The youngster has only played in 14 games in the bigs, but he has wasted no time making a fantasy impact. He has a .310 batting average and has already smacked two long balls. He has one stolen base, but has been thrown out three times already. Either way, the youngster has been given the green light on the bases.
Even more appealing to the rookie’s fantasy value is that he is eligible as an outfielder and as a shortstop. The team has decided to play him in the infield sparingly, as they want to get him more acclimated to playing in the outfield moving forward. His ability to field multiple positions though will only help his value in weekly leagues and will keep him in the lineup on a regular basis.
Lake is a dynamic stick, and if anything else, is worth locking up in dynasty leagues. He has a promising career ahead of him in Chi-town and his fantasy value can only go up from here.
