The Green Bay Packers are known for their offense and for good reason. Their high-scoring offense, led by All-World quarterback Aaron Rodgers, has been the reason they’ve won so many games the last few years.
But don’t forget that the year they won the championship they had a good defense, too. They had a defense that could rush the passer and make plays in the secondary. That kind of defense is what gets the job done in the NFL today, and it’s the kind of defense you want on your Fantasy team.
Led by pass rushing outside linebacker Clay Matthews, the Packers defense does a great job of pressuring opposing quarterbacks. They don’t let them get comfortable in the pocket, and that leads to plenty of negative plays.
Matthews is joined in the linebacker corps by the steady and strong A.J. Hawk and second-year man Nick Perry. Perry, a talented outside linebacker from USC, is looking to build on a promising but injury-plagued rookie campaign.
Those linebackers are the core of a defense that gives up yards, as most NFL defenses do today, but can make enough big plays to be a viable Fantasy defense. You don’t need to be dominant on the defensive front in your Fantasy league, you just need to be solid and dependable. Basically, it’s just like real life.
It’s always a good idea to wait until the very end of your draft to take a defense. Let the other owners waste picks in earlier rounds on the defenses that will be fought over. Wait until the end and take a flier on a defense like the Packers, who could surprise this year.
