Week 9 of the NFL season brings to us several bye weeks for kicker-prominent teams. This inevitably means that someone out there is going to be looking for a backup kicker they can slide into the lineup and squeeze out more than zero points from the position.
Now if you’re one of those guys who has less respect for a kicker than you do chewing gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe, then you are probably just going to grab whatever kicker is available with the highest stat line.
It’s a sound enough strategy and it’s probably the safest way to keep from getting a goose egg at that position. What if you miss out on that top-dog kicker in the waiver order, who should you target next?
My suggestion would be Kansas City Chiefs kicker Ryan Succop.
On the season, Succop has 18 field goals attempted and 15 made with a long of 51. He’s also converted 21-of-21 extra point attempts. Since the Chiefs haven’t had their bye yet, this means he is averaging two field goal attempts and 2.6 extra points per game.
This week, the Chiefs go up against the Buffalo Bills, a team that has at times shown a stingy defense, while their offense tends to puke turnovers at random times throughout the game. Even if the Bills turn the ball over and their defense shuts the Chief’s offense down, Succup still has the range to boot a long one through the uprights.
Succop might not save your fantasy season, but he still has the leg and the opportunities in Week 9 to make for a great bye week replacement.
