Week 12 Fantasy Football Dark Horse Sleeper: TE Tony Gonzalez

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

After a hot start to the 2013 fantasy football season, many of the league’s best tight ends have started to cool off. One of these All-Pro fantasy options that have struggled to score points in recent weeks has been TE Tony Gonzalez of the Atlanta Falcons.

Gonzo has only hauled in one touchdown over his last six games and has only had one game with over 65 yards over the last five weeks. The aging tight end has been outscored by several waiver wire additions over that time and owners have started to loose faith in Atlanta’s offense altogether.

However, fantasy fans should remain patient with the future Hall of Famer. Gonzalez is still getting plenty of targets each week and is the team’s best option inside of the red-zone. Plus, it’s not like Gonzo has been getting stellar play from his quarterback lately.

QB Matt Ryan has only thrown five touchdowns over his last four games, but he has uncharacteristically thrown nine interceptions over that span as well. Ryan has had significant problems moving the chains without wideouts Julio Jones and Roddy White, which has in turn affected Gonzo’s space to operate. White has finally returned to the field, though, so fantasy fans can expect Gonzalez to start getting more room to shake loose.

Atlanta will face the New Orleans Saints this Thursday night, and this is a defense that Gonzo has abused in recent seasons. The tight end has caught six touchdown passes over his last six games against the divisional rival and this looks like the perfect week for him to have a huge fantasy performance.

If you still have Gonzo sitting on for roster, make sure to get him active this weekend. He should be good for around 70-80 yards and be able to haul in at least one touchdown.
