Fantasy Baseball 2014: Outfield Sleepers
In every fantasy baseball season, there are players who are overlooked in drafts. Today, I take a look at six outfielders who are being way undervalued in drafts heading into 2014.
6. Kole Calhoun
6. Kole Calhoun
Calhoun is currently being drafted as the 56th outfielder in ESPN leagues and 59th in Yahoo! leagues. I have Calhoun ranked as my 43rd outfielder heading into the 2014 season. Calhoun has the ability to hit for power and average, and he also has the type of speed that could lead to a 20-steal season. Calhoun is slated to lead off for the Angels this year and could pay off huge dividends for fantasy owners.
5. Khris Davis
5. Khris Davis
Davis is currently going as the 43rd outfielder in ESPN drafts and somehow, he's dropped all the way down to the 76th outfielder selected in Yahoo! drafts. I have Davis ranked as my 35th outfielder heading into the 2014 season. Davis' .316 ISO was the second highest in baseball -- trailing only that of Chris Davis -- and now that he has a full time job, he could provide loads of power for fantasy owners.
4. Alejandro De Aza
4. Alejandro De Aza
De Aza is currently being drafted as the 51st outfielder in ESPN leagues and the 56th outfielder in Yahoo! leagues. I have De Aza ranked as my 37th outfielder at the moment. De Aza has finished as a top-40 outfielder in each of the past two seasons, and there's nothing to suggest that he won't be in that class again this season.
3. Alfonso Soriano
3. Alfonso Soriano
Soriano is currently going as the 34th outfielder in ESPN leagues and 39th in Yahoo! leagues. Soriano is currently my 21st-ranked outfielder. He has 66 home runs and 24 steals in his last two seasons combined, and was the ninth-ranked outfielder and a top 30 overall player in 2013. That doesn't sound like a guy who should be drafted in the mid-30s among outfielders to me.
2. Carlos Beltran
2. Carlos Beltran
Beltran is currently being drafted 23rd among outfielders in ESPN leagues and 29th in Yahoo! leagues. I have Beltran ranked as my 13th outfielder heading into 2014. Beltran has been a top-20 outfielder in each of the last two seasons and is more than capable of being an excellent contributor in four of five standard roto categories (while chipping in a handful of steals).
1. Hunter Pence
1. Hunter Pence
Pence is currently going as the 18th outfielder in ESPN drafts and 20th in Yahoo! drafts. Pence is my eighth-ranked outfielder heading into the 2014 season. He has hit at least 22 home runs, driven in at least 91 RBIs and scored at least 84 runs in each of the last four seasons, and last year he stole 22 bases in 25 attempts. Pence offers a ton of value at where he's currently going in drafts.
