First baseman Jose Abreu has been an early surprise in fantasy baseball so far this season. He has two multi-home run games, his most recent being April 10. He also leads the league with 14 RBI. The Chicago White Sox took a chance on the rookie and it’s paying off. Fantasy owners also took a chance on Abreu, drafting him in the middle-to-late rounds, and have loved his success.
While it’s still early in the season, now is the time to sell high on Abreu. He’s unlikely to continue this hot streak and will disappoint you sooner rather than later. There are other fantasy owners who grabbed Mike Trout or Miguel Cabrera as their first pick and are waiting for this type of production. Trout and Cabrera have a combined three home runs and eight RBI. Even the consistent Robinson Cano has been struggling, zero home runs and just two RBI.
If you can convince an owner with one of these players to drop their fantasy stud in favor of an up-and-coming player who is producing now, you’ll be in the championship guaranteed. Once pitchers start facing Abreu again and again, they’ll start getting the upper hand over the youngster. He’ll face a slump or two, giving fantasy owners nightmares.
Abreu is a great story so far. He was never expected to put up these kind of numbers this early. If you own him, you should ride this train for as long as possible. However, once he strings together a few 0-for-4 games, the window to sell begins to close. It’s likely you have other options for power and can afford to give up Abreu for an upgrade at a few positions.
Don’t worry about getting fair value, worry about upgrading your team for a playoff run.
