The catcher position has notoriously been a headache for fantasy baseball owners. There are only a handful of elite options out there and most teams tend to rest their catcher on a regular basis, which only diminishes their everyday value.
One catcher that has become a reliable fantasy contributor in recent weeks has been Miami Marlins C Jarrod Saltalamacchia.
The veteran currently has an impressive .299 batting average, which is fourth among fantasy catchers. Saltalamacchia is also riding a five-game hitting streak and the Florida native also has an absurd .409 On Base Percentage. Saltalamacchia has drawn 15 walks on the year and has looked much more disciplined at the plate.
Saltalamacchia has already belted four home runs in the last 10 games and now has five long balls on the year. Even more impressive, the backstop crushed a game-winning solo homer in 10th inning against the New York Mets last week. He has shown some serious pop for a catcher and he continues to climb up the team’s batting order.
Salty is the premier free agent catcher to go after this weekend. He seems primed to have another 20-plus homer season and the veteran is available in a large number of fantasy leagues. If you need a catcher with a heavy bat, then take a shot on Saltalamacchia this week.
