When the 2014 fantasy baseball season started, 3B Miguel Cabrera was likely the prediction for the fantasy MVP. However, through five weeks of action that has not been the case. To get you caught up to speed, here are the top-five early season candidates for the 2014 fantasy baseball MVP.

5. OF Nelson Cruz, Baltimore Orioles

Not many teams were willing to take a shot on Cruz this off-season, as he was coming off a nasty 50-game PED suspension. Since joining Baltimore, though, Cruz has been on fire. The outfielder has already slugged eight home runs and racked up 27 RBIs. He has played like an All-Star fantasy outfielder through the first five weeks and the veteran is currently a dark horse MVP candidate.

4. 1B Adrian Gonzalez, Los Angeles Dodgers

Gonzalez was widely ignored this spring, as he wasn’t drafted within the top-10 first basemen in any formats. However, Gonzo has been tearing the cover off the ball this season. The veteran has already crushed nine home runs and currently has an impressive .302 batting average. Gonzalez is putting up MVP numbers across the board.

3. SS Troy Tulowitzki, Colorado Rockies

Tulowitzki is currently leading the entire majors with a .400 batting average and an unthinkable .500 OBP. Tulo is also contributing in the power department as well, by crushing seven homers through the first 30 games. The stopgap is truly having a MVP fantasy season.

2. OF Giancarlo Stanton, Miami Marlins

After four years in the league, Stanton is finally living up to his lofty expectations. The power slugger has already hit eight long balls and is currently tied for the league lead with 33 RBIs. Stanton finally seems ready to hit 40-plus home runs and he will remain in the MVP conversation all season long.

1. 1B Jose Abreu, Chicago White Sox

Abreu has been hitting everything this season. The rookie is shockingly leading the league with 11 home runs and he is even tied for the league lead with 33 RBIs. No hitter in fantasy is producing like Abreu right now and the Cuban Crusher is easily the frontrunner for the 2014 fantasy MVP.
