Fantasy Baseball: 5 Spot Starters For The Weekend
Streaming starting pitchers is a highly effective strategy in fantasy baseball when done correctly. With all of the starting pitchers currently injured in MLB, finding useful spot starters is more imperative now than ever before. In the following slideshow, I highlight the five starting pitchers I'm streaming Memorial Day weekend.
Dallas Keuchel 5/24 @ Sea
Dallas Keuchel 5/24 @ Sea
Keuchel has nine starts under his belt in 2014 and he currently owns a 2.92 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP to go with an 8.03 K/9; and his 2.66 xFIP suggests he's actually been even better than his ERA indicates. Saturday, Keuchel gets to take on a Seattle Mariners offense that is 28th in MLB with a .299 OBP and is averaging just 3.37 runs per game at home this season.
Travis Wood 5/24 @ SD
Travis Wood 5/24 @ SD
Wood gets to take on the San Diego Padres in the spacious confines of Petco Park on Saturday and anytime a pitcher gets to face the Padres in Petco, it's an intriguing opportunity. The Padres are hitting just .230 against left-handed pitching this season (fifth-worst average in MLB) and they're last -- by a significant margin -- with 143 runs scored this season, despite having played the second-most games.
Jaime Garcia 5/24 @ Cin
Jaime Garcia 5/24 @ Cin
Over the last three seasons, Jaime Garcia has started nine games against the Cincinnati Reds and he's 5-2 with a 2.64 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. The Reds are 28th in MLB with just 160 runs scored and they've struggled against left-handed pitching this season, hitting just .234 off of southpaws (sixth lowest in baseball). The Reds are still without their best hitter, Joey Votto, adding the cherry on top of what should be a very streamable matchup.
Trevor Bauer 5/25 @ Bal
Trevor Bauer 5/25 @ Bal
First off, Trevor Bauer is a guy who should be owned in all leagues. This weekend, he takes on a Baltimore Orioles team that has hit significantly better on the road this year than they have at home. Baltimore's .280 average on the road is the best in baseball; but their .240 average at home is the sixth worst and their .351 SLG percentage at home is the third worst.
Jason Hammel 5/25 @ SD
Jason Hammel 5/25 @ SD
Again we have a pitcher facing the Padres in Petco. You know the routine. Also, Hammel is currently sporting a 2.91 ERA to go with a sparkling 0.90 WHIP this season and he's 13th among starting pitchers on ESPN's player rater, ahead of aces like Yu Darvish, Felix Hernandez and Jon Lester.
