Josh Beckett became the first pitcher to record a no-hitter in the 2014 season. It took him 128 pitches, but he recorded a shut out against the Philadelphia Phillies. Beckett is pitching great this season after struggling over the last two. If he’s still available, add Beckett while the iron is still hot.
Beckett joined the Los Angeles Dodgers midway through the 2012 season. In his last two seasons with the Dodgers, Beckett recorded a 2-8 record with a 4.06 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 79 strikeouts in 86.2 innings. He missed most of the 2013 season with thoracic outlet syndrome
Entering the 2014 season, Beckett was a buy-very low candidate after his shortened 2013 season. He pitched four games in April, going longer than five innings just once. He finished the month with a 2.45 ERA. He’s made five starts in May and posted a 3-1 record. He has won his last three starts and struck out six in each of those starts. In his nine total starts, he has a 2.43 ERA and 1.02 WHIP.
Beckett is owned in 72 percent of ESPN.com leagues. There has been an increase of 20.4 percent over the last week or so. This season could be Beckett’s last as a fantasy-relevant player, so add him while he’s still pitching well. He just turned 34 and health has always been a concern with Beckett.
Beckett’s next start should be against the Pittsburgh Pirates, a middle-of-the-road offense. Beckett, if he continues his winning streak, could be a nice pickup for the rest of the season.
