Most people wait until the very last round to draft a fantasy football defense. However, the Seattle Seahawks are clearly the best defensive unit in fantasy and will be worth reaching for this summer. They rank near the top of the league in every  category and simply do not allow points.

Positives:

Seattle was the number one fantasy defense across the board last season. They led the NFL with 28 interceptions and were first in turnover differential (+20) as well. They were even ranked first in the league in passing yards against (172 yards/game) and seventh in rushing yards against (101.6 yards/game).

The secondary is also next to impossible to throw against. Seattle has stars like Richard Sherman, Earl Thomas, and Kam Chancellor roaming their secondary, which makes it next to impossible for opposing offenses to move the ball. Seattle’s secondary always comes up with big plays and  the unit rarely allows multiple touchdowns through the air per game.

The Seahawks have truly become the ultimate fantasy defense.

Negatives:

Despite the lack of yards and points, Seattle struggles at times to get to the quarterback. The unit was tied for eighth in the league with 44 sacks and their linemen had problems shedding blockers. Even worse, the team lost this most experienced pass rusher this offseason. Veteran DE Chris Clemons left the team for the Jacksonville Jaguars and his presence will be greatly missed on the line. Look for Seattle to see a dip in sacks this season.

Final Verdict:

Seattle is the only defense that is worth reaching for this summer. They will pick off plenty of passes and will constantly keep opposing offense in check, just don’t expect them to be near the top of the league in sacks in 2014.
