Over the years, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has dealt with his fair share of criticism. He has been scrutinized for his performances in big playoff games and in crucial moments of some regular season games in the past. Whether you believe that the harsh criticism is warranted or not, Romo’s fantasy value is actually a very different story.
Since 2006, the year he became a full-time starter, Romo has been a top-10 fantasy QB seemingly every year. He has thrown at least 25 touchdowns every year with the exception of 2010, when he only played six games. He has thrown 30 or more touchdown passes in three of eight seasons, and he has never thrown 20 interceptions in a single season.
Besides the pure numbers, Romo has also been impressive as far as durability is concerned. He has played at least 15 games in seven seasons and has played all 16 games in six.
Another reason to like him in fantasy football is the weapons around him. The Cowboys have a nice mix at both WR and TE to work with. At WR, they have Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams, Cole Beasley and rookie draftees Devin Street and Laron Byrd. At TE, they feature Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar and James Hanna. Romo can certainly do damage with that group this season.
Despite all the things to like about him in fantasy, his draft stock doesn’t seem to reflect his talent. So far this year in fantasy leagues, he is being drafted as the 11th QB and 84th overall (on average) according to FantasyPros.com.
If your strategy is to load up on other positions and wait to draft a QB, Romo should provide similar production to many QBs in the NFL. The difference is that he won’t cost nearly as much as the top-tier guys. Unlike in real life, he could lead you to a championship if you draft him in fantasy in your league.
