5 Shrewd Plays for August 27
For any fantasy baseball team, starting the right players is unsurprisingly the key to success. This is especially true in the immensely popular daily leagues, where a single player can mean the difference between a big payday and crushing disappointment. Based on matchups and talent, the following players could all be in for an outstanding day on Aug. 27 and deserve your utmost consideration.
(All stats current through 7:00 p.m. Tuesday)
5. 1B - Logan Morrison: Seattle Mariners
5. 1B - Logan Morrison: Seattle Mariners
The month of August has been kind to this left-handed bat as Morrison has posted an outstanding .352 average over 20 games. With an excellent matchup scheduled for Wednesday, more of the same could be in order. The M's will host Colby Lewis and the Texas Rangers, and to go along with a terrible 5.54 ERA on the season, left-handers have knocked Lewis around to the tune of a ridiculous .356 average.
4. SS - Jhonny Peralta: St. Louis Cardinals
4. SS - Jhonny Peralta: St. Louis Cardinals
Peralta has really been dialed in of late as he's posted an outstanding .348 average to go along with 14 RBIs over his past 18 contests. The veteran has enjoyed facing left-handed pitching this year, and will see a struggling southpaw on Wednesday. Jeff Locke will get the starting nod against the red birds, and to go along with a 4.81 ERA over his past seven starts, right-handers are batting .279 against him on the season.
3. C - Buster Posey: San Francisco Giants
3. C - Buster Posey: San Francisco Giants
Injuries have held this All-Star back in 2014, but he looks healthy right now and primed for a big finish. Posey has unleashed his potential the past five games with a dazzling .455 average to go along with a pair of HRs. He should be able to keep that momentum going on Wednesday. The Giants will face starter Franklin Morales, and right-handers have teed off on him with a .316 average and 42 extra-base hits over 335 at bats this year.
2. OF - Andrew McCutchen: Pittsburgh Pirates
2. OF - Andrew McCutchen: Pittsburgh Pirates
The reigning NL MVP has shaken off the rust after a short DL stint and has now mashed seven hits, including three HRs, over his last four games. Wednesday will bring Adam Wainwright to the hill against the Pirates, and that could be good news for McCutchen. Wainwright has struggled with a 5.33 ERA over his past five outings, and McCutchen owns a cool .342 career average against him over 38 at bats.
1. P - David Price: Detroit Tigers
1. P - David Price: Detroit Tigers
This former Cy Young Award winner has turned his dominance-O-meter up to the max his last two starts as he's allowed just one earned run on four hits over 16 innings of work. Expect more of the same from him on Wednesday when the Tigers host the New York Yankees. Price has handled the Yankee bats with relative ease his past three starts against them as he's posted a strong 2.03 ERA and 27 K's over 22.2 innings of work.
