Eric Ebron has a lot of hype entering his first rookie year in professional football. With his size, speed and ability to make big plays as soon as the football is in his hands, he is expected to add a whole new dimension to the Detroit Lions passing attack. So far during preseason football, he’s been struggling to grasp everything in stride, yet fantasy football owners shouldn’t worry about that too much. Ebron will continue to improve as the season progresses and will be worth it in the long run.
There is no question that Ebron has the right tools to become a solid player at his position. The only problem is, he missed some playing time due to injury which has hindered his progression. It looks like he will need some more time to truly find that state of comfort so he can execute without dropping passes or missing key assignments. Blocking has been an issue for him that will only improve over time.
With the Lions deploying a new dual tight end offensive set of plays this season, Ebron will be able to contribute nicely alongside Brandon Pettigrew. This means there will be plenty of fantasy points scored by Ebron on a consistent basis once he starts to get into the rhythm of things on offense. It also helps that his best moments are usually in the end zone which means, because Pettigrew will most likely draw all the attention by defenders, it should allow Ebron to score plenty of touchdowns from the opposite side.
In the end, it’s worth investing a fantasy football draft pick with Ebron because he has the potential to start slow, but build himself up into a top option down the road. While he’s at the moment a TE2 or TE3 option, his worth will only increase over time as long as you are patient with his progress. Also, keep in mind, he’s very versatile in that he can line up at different positions on the field, including as a wide receiver.
Who knows, maybe the Lions will feature him as a wideout on a few spread out formations thus increasing his production value even more. Expect the Lions to come up with plenty of creative ways to utilize Ebron to his full breakout potential once he starts to really heat things up.
