5 Stars To Avoid In Daily Fantasy Football During Week 1

The 2014 NFL season is finally here, which means we will all be spending way too much time on fantasy football over the course of the next five months or so. Daily leagues such as Fan Duel and Draft Kings are set up a bit differently than season-long formats--but the idea is still the game; find good matchups, and stay away from recipes for disaster. Here's a look at five stars to avoid in Week 1.

Despite going up against a suspect Washington Redskins' secondary, avoiding Johnson this week is probably your best bet. Houston's offense is a complete question mark currently and it will undoubtedly take QB Ryan Fitzpatrick some time to get acclimated to his receiving corps. Vincent Jackson, Keenan Allen and Roddy White are all priced either even with, or less than Johnson on most host sites and are far better options collectively.

4. Eddie Lacy, Green Bay Packers

Green Bay has what appears to be the second best offensive unit in the NFL this season, and RB Eddie Lacy is undoubtedly going to produce a stellar sophomore campaign, but Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks isn't the best time to get the ball rolling. I expect QB Aaron Rodgers to produce, but Lacy will be held to a feeble 3.5 YPC average which will not amount to much yardage, and the Packers are better off using play action at the goal line.

Seattle has the NFL's best defense, and most weeks they are going to be a no-brainer pick, but Aaron Rodgers is not only dominant in the pocket, but he can also salvage plays while scrambling, which is something Seattle won't be able to stop. Plus, being that they are the most expensive defense available, there are far better options with good matchups this week that are affordable such as the Chicago Bears or the Arizona Cardinals.

2. Rob Gronkowski, New England Patriots

Gronkowski's injury status might not be as promising as the Patriots indicated initially this summer, and I'd expect him to see limited duty against the Dolphins in Week 1. There's absolutely no reason to pay the hefty price for Gronk when Julius Thomas is a bit cheaper, and Jordan Cameron costs significantly less. Stay away until the dust surrounding Gronk's knee settles one way or the other.

The Houston Texans' defense is going to be tough this year with the addition of Jadeveon Clowney and the return of LB Brian Cushing. Johnathan Joseph is still a solid corner, and the Texans' ability to set the edge and keep Griffin III in the pocket limits his strength of scrambling to a minimum. Griffin III is not a good pocket passer, and matches up terribly against Houston. Phillip Rivers, Tony Romo and Matt Ryan are cheaper and safer plays.
