“The Million Dollar Man Made of Glass,” aka Sam Bradford, recently stated that Brian Quick looked like a much improved player in training camp this year. Other spectators purveying the St. Louis Rams training camp this summer even backed up these claims, going so far as to state that Quick looks like a man who has finally figured it all out. One would certainly hope so, especially if you are an obsessive Rams fan like me.
When the Rams drafted Quick with the 33rd pick in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft, they figured they had just drafted a raw, athletic talent who just needed a little coaching up to shore up his fundamentals. At 6-foot-4, 220 pounds, Quick was picked by most pundits to be one of the receivers with the highest ceiling in the entire draft class. His career totals, however, are pretty dismal: just 29 receptions, 458 yards, and four touchdowns in two years.
But receiver is one of the most difficult transitions to make in the NFL, so Quick still has time to progress into a solid receiver, even if Shaun Hill or Case Keenum is throwing him the ball this season. In very brief moments last season, Quick looked like a top-notch receiver, like when he caught a 73 yard pass against The Carolina Panthers during a 30-15 loss. Most Rams fans have repressed that game because it spelled the end of Bradford’s 2013-14 campaign, but Quick ended with an impressive performance. Kenny Britt may dial in another lackluster season this year despite being with a new team, so if Quick outshines him, he could easily be lining up in the WR1 position alongside Tavon Austin.
However, statistics and analysis aside, my main argument for this pick goes back to Bradford’s endorsement. After all, this is a man who managed to sign a six year, $78 million contract who has little to show for it aside from medical bills. While not a proven winner in the NFL, he’s clearly a proven winner in life, and you should hang on his every word.
