As I was watching the Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers game the other night, I could not help but think how impressive Seattle WR Percy Harvin looked. I felt like I was watching the 1976 classic, The Bad News Bears, and Harvin was Harley Davidson riding, little league phenom Kelly Leak. He was everywhere, and the Packers’ defense just simply did not have an answer for him, as he found open space on just about every offensive play. The guy has a knack for finding spots on the field where defenders aren’t and making the most of it. This aspect of Harvin’s game is what makes him a huge fantasy asset to owners.
Harvin finished the game catching all seven of his targets from QB Russell Wilson for 59 yards and carrying the ball four times for 41 yards. He also returned three kickoffs for 60 yards, giving him a total of 160 all-purpose yards. Despite not reaching the end zone, Harvin’s performance gave fantasy owners something to look forward to this season. So no need to panic, it’s only a matter of time before he takes a hand off, reception or kick return to the house.
When will Harvin take one to the house, you ask? Next week Seattle faces a young, inexperienced San Diego Chargers defense that gave up an NFL-high 9.1 yards per reception last year. Brandon Flowers, the newly signed corner from Kansas City, will likely be assigned the difficult task of chasing Harvin all over the field. The Chargers prefer utilizing press coverage schemes with their DBs, a formation that Flowers notably struggled with in KC. As a result, look for Seattle to exploit this mismatch by targeting their versatile wide-out early and often. I expect Harvin to get into the end zone one way or another during the game. With that said, I thereby label Seattle’s top receiver a “must start” next week in all fantasy leagues.
Expect big numbers going forward from Harvin, as long as he can stay healthy.
