Fantasy Football Week 2 Start or Sit: Pierre Garcon

The Washington Redskins have a tasty matchup in Week 2 as they take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in their home opener. While we still do not yet know if Robert Griffin III will be as effective as he was his rookie year, the matchup alone makes Pierre Garcon a great start this week, especially if you are in a PPR league.

When DeSean Jackson signed in the offseason, many believed that he would take away from Garcon’s targets, but if Week 1 is any indicator, that won’t be an issue. Garcon was targeted a team-high 12 times against a solid Houston Texans defense, while catching 10 passes for 77 yards. While he may not see that many deep balls, he still works the middle of the field as well as any receiver in the game.

After getting off to a slow start last week, Nick Foles of the Philadelphia Eagles threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns against the Jaguars. Griffin may not have the same output, but it will be a much easier defensive matchup for the Redskins than the Texans. Although the offseason additions of Chris Clemons and Red Bryant have clearly helped their pass rush, the Jaguars haven’t done much to improve their secondary, a unit that ranked 25th last season by giving up nearly 250 yards passing per game.

Garcon has been the Redskins’ top target for the past three years, including a 113 receptions last season. Griffin looks his way a lot, and Garcon should capitalize on those chances this week. Feel confident in Garcon this week, as you should expect around seven or eight targets for 100 yards. I also believe that he gets into the end zone for his first score of the new season. Garcon is a solid No. 2 wide receiver option this week.
