Top 10 Sleeper Plays In Week 2 Fantasy Football
We saw a fair amount of unexpected performances during Week 1 of the NFL season, and there's undoubtedly plenty of value to be had in fantasy football if you're paying adequate attention. Typically, the team that found the most sleeper value plays is the team that wins for the week, as most teams' stars essentially produce at the same level consistently.
Here's a look at the top 10 sleeper plays in Week 2 fantasy football.
10. Levine Toilolo, TE, Atlanta Falcons
10. Levine Toilolo, TE, Atlanta Falcons
The Atlanta Falcons proved that their offense is back, and possibly better than ever after putting up 37 points against the New Orleans Saints in Week 1. Matt Ryan and company are going to be a problem in 2014, and TE Levine Toilolo undoubtedly stands to benefit from the presence of WRs Julio Jones and Roddy White out wide. He finished the opener with just 19 yards, but scored a TD and is in Atlanta's red-zone designs this season.
9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers D/ST
9. Tampa Bay Buccaneers D/ST
The Buccaneers were beaten by a Carolina Panthers team who had to start journeyman Derek Anderson at QB due to Cam Newton's injury. While their performance was embarrassing, the unit will still be very solid this season. This particular matchup in Week 2 against the St. Louis Rams, who have been riddled with turmoil and injuries, sets up very well for the Buccaneers' strong front-seven against an anemic offense.
8. Rod Streater, WR, Oakland Raiders
8. Rod Streater, WR, Oakland Raiders
Streater would be a far more popular player nationally if he was on a team other than the Oakland Raiders, but he's constantly overlooked in fantasy football circles due to the Raiders' negative aura. Streater was great in Week 1 against the New York Jets with five catches for 46 yards and a TD (10 fantasy points) and is available in 96 percent of leagues on ESPN.
7. Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles
7. Zach Ertz, TE, Philadelphia Eagles
The Eagles' offense is going to be dynamic this season as indicated by their second-half performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 1. Ertz is going to be a top sleeper most weeks as he doesn't get a ton of attention nationally, but if he continues to score on the pace like he did on Sunday (77 yards, TD, 13 points), fantasy owners are going to be scrambling to pick him up. He's available in 40 percent of ESPN leagues currently.
6. Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee Titans
6. Justin Hunter, WR, Tennessee Titans
The Titans' offense flew under the radar this summer, but looked spectacular against a punishing Kansas City Chiefs' defensive unit in Week 1. QB Jake Locker and the skill players alike all project to be top fantasy options against the putrid Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. If Week 1 (three catches, 63 yards) was indicative of what we'll see from Hunter in 2014, he's going to have a breakout campaign. He's still available in 15 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Golden Tate, WR, Detroit Lions
5. Golden Tate, WR, Detroit Lions
For some unrecognizable reason, WR Golden Tate gets absolutely no respect in fantasy football. But over the course of the last two seasons, he's obliterated value more often than not. Opposing defenses have to spend a ton of time and effort to try to stop Calvin Johnson, and Tate will take advantage of that in Week 2, and for the rest of the season benefit from plenty of single coverage scoring opportunities.
4. Carlos Hyde, RB, San Francisco 49ers
4. Carlos Hyde, RB, San Francisco 49ers
I didn't buy into the prevailing theory this past summer that Frank Gore was going to lose a ton of looks to rookie Carlos Hyde, but after Week 1 it appears that is indeed the scenario that will play out. Hyde could easily be in an evenly distributed platoon with Gore before we know it, and he's still available in 10 percent of ESPN leagues if you hurry.
3. Jake Locker, QB, Tennessee Titans
3. Jake Locker, QB, Tennessee Titans
Locker lit up the Kansas City Chiefs' stout defense for 266 yards and two TDs in Week 1 and could easily increase those statistics to over 300 yards and three TDs against the hapless Dallas Cowboys' secondary. He's hardly owned and should be on your roster right now before his popularity soars in fantasy circles. Locker's still available in 89 percent of leagues on ESPN currently, but will be picked up in a hurry with another strong performance.
2. Houston Texans D/ST
2. Houston Texans D/ST
I was on the Houston Texans' defensive bandwagon last week and they did not disappoint, finishing with 20 fantasy points which led all NFL defenses as the top fantasy scorer. Week 2 projects to be another perfect matchup for the Texans as they oppose the Oakland Raiders, whose QB Derrick Carr is starting just his second NFL game. They are still available in 38 percent of ESPN leagues, but could easily perform as the top D/ST once again in Week 2.
1. Dwayne Allen, TE, Indianapolis Colts
1. Dwayne Allen, TE, Indianapolis Colts
I'll be the first to admit I was wrong about Dwayne Allen during the preseason, as I anticipated Coby Fleener would still get the majority of the looks at TE from QB Andrew Luck. The two each saw their share of targets, but Allen had the better performance with four receptions, 64 yards and one TD for 12 fantasy points (fifth TE). He's available in 89 percent of ESPN leagues and should be starting on your roster in Week 2.
