The Arizona Cardinals’ lead RB Andre Ellington is listed as questionable going into Week 2’s matchup against the New York Giants. Right before Week 1, Ellington suffered a slight tear to his peroneus longus tendon — or in other words, an injury to a tendon in his foot that helps him shift left to right. Initial reports stated that the second-year back out of Clemson would undergo surgery and miss 4-6 weeks. Ellington proved those rumors false and was active in Monday night’s opener against the San Diego Chargers. Playing through the injury, he took part in 36-0f-70 offensive snaps, posting subpar numbers for fantasy owners (13 rushes for 53 yards, five receptions for 27 yards and a lost fumble).
Following Monday night’s win against the Chargers, Ellington was reported to be wearing a walking boat in order to get the injury to “calm down.” On Wednesday and Thursday, the starting RB did not participate in practice but was seen riding a stationary bike during Thursday’s media portion of drills. The hope is for him to be limited in Friday’s practice and still be listed as “questionable” going into Sunday’s 1 p.m. game. The way the injury is being downplayed, it looks as if Ellington will be suited up and ready to go for the Cards.
Ellington’s workload should see a slight increase against the Giants this week, after showing no visible signs of the foot injury hampering his movement in Week 1. The Giants have a stingy run defense, so I don’t expect him to do too much on the ground. However, the former sixth-round pick does excel in the passing game, so I expect a nice PPR performance and possibly a trip to the end zone as well. Bottom line, Ellington is a nice Flex/RB2 start in most leagues, barring any sort of setback that may keep him off the field on Sunday.
