The first week of the fantasy football season saw many owners scrambling to find a replacement for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton. He was a game-time decision with a rib injury, but the signal caller ended up missing the season opener.
As a result of Newton being inactive, backup Derek Anderson became a popular waiver wire addition in Week 1. Shockingly, though, Anderson had a very strong outing. He finished the game 24-34 (70.6%) for 230 yards. He also threw two touchdowns and didn’t have a single turnover. It was an all-around strong fantasy performance from the journeyman quarterback.
After his big game, thousands of overanxious owners added the veteran on Monday morning and he was literally the number one waiver wire QB option this week. Unfortunately, Anderson is literally a one-hit wonder. Newton has been already been named the starter for Week 2, which immediately moves Anderson back to the bench.
Newton will be a must-start in all formats this week. He faces off against a lackluster Detroit Lions defense and the dual-threat quarterback is primed to have a big performance for fantasy fans. He seems to be completely over his lingering rib injury and the fourth-year QB is ready to get to work.
If you own Newton, stop being delusional and start the popular early-round pick in Week 2. After all, you drafted him in the top-five rounds for a reason.
