Fantasy Football: Terrance West A Terrific Week 3 Waiver Wire Pickup

Terrance West, Cleveland Browns

During the preseason, Cleveland Browns rookie running back Terrance West showed glimpses of the special player he could be in the NFL. He gained the praises of many, myself included, for his relentless running style and ability to extend plays after the initial point of contact. With Ben Tate as the only running back listed ahead of West, he was predicted to take over as the starter eventually. But even I, West’s biggest preseason fan, didn’t expect it to be this early.

Through two weeks, the rookie has rushed for 168 yards, tying him for fourth in the NFL. It will be interesting to see what coach Mike Pettine decides to do once Tate returns from his injury. This situation is familiar for Tate, who has spent his career filling in for an injured Arian Foster but being relegated back to the bench whenever Foster was healthy. One can only assume that in the same nature, once Tate is healthy, he’ll be named the starter.

While it’s hard to imagine West “Kaepernicking” the starting job from Tate, until the injured running back returns, West figures to be a solid running back in any Fantasy Football format. He’s averaging 84 rushing yards-per-game, and that shouldn’t decrease in the next week when the Browns have a home game against the Baltimore Ravens. West is owned in 93 percent of ESPN fantasy leagues, but that number should increase to 100 percent before the start of next week.

Last week the Ravens surrendered just 59 yards on the ground to Le’Veon Bell, but that was on only 11 attempts. The Browns, on the other hand, have no choice but to move the ball on the ground seeing as they have no legitimate threats through the air.

West will get his share of touches, and his 4.8 yards-per-carry this season suggests that he’ll make the most of them. If he is available, pick him up and start him, because as long as he receives a solid amount of touches, he’s a must-start.
