Fantasy Football Week 3 Start or Sit: RB Bishop Sankey

When the Tennessee Titans drafted RB Bishop Sankey in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft, most fantasy owners thought he would be an instant contributor. After all, he was heading to a team without a clear starter and he possessed the talent to be a stud right out of the gate. Unfortunately for him and fantasy owners alike, Shonn Greene has had a fantastic start to the season, eliminating any chance of Sankey seizing the starting job right away.

Through the first two games, Greene has led the team in carries with 20 total rushes. It may not seem like a lot, but when you consider that Sankey has only carried the football eight times, it is significant. Greene has ran much better than Sankey in his opportunities as well. He has rushed for 111 yards so far in his 20 attempts, good for a 5.6 YPC average. Contrast that with Sankey, who has gained just 28 yards on his eight carries, and it is obvious who the better rusher is. The presence of Dexter McCluster in the running game even further diminishes Sankey’s short-term fantasy value.

Besides the obvious workload concerns, there is another reason why you should stay away from Sankey in Week 3. That reason is the Cincinnati Bengals run defense. The Bengals have allowed just 156 rushing yards and a single TD through the first two weeks of the season. They are ranked sixth in the league defending the run in ESPN leagues.

Given the defense he will be facing and the workload concerns he will ultimately have, playing him in Week 3 will only end in disaster for your fantasy team. In fact, you are taking a substantial risk playing any RB on the Titans this week. None of them receive a substantial enough workload to matter, and they face a very tough opponent. Sankey is still worth hanging onto in keeper leagues, but he isn’t worth starting or even owning in standard leagues right now.
